Pretty good read.
I adored this book and highly recommend it. It took a little bit to get started; I kept forgetting which character was named what. Once it took off, though, man, did it take off! The characters were really strong and memorable. The emotional moments resonated. I'm not going to give specifics here, so no spoilers- but the best relationship in the story is the one between Emma and Stella. The central question seems to be answered before the end, but I was left feeling unsatisfied... until I realized there was still more to the book! The end made me want to tear up and cheer at the same time. It was a very satisfying ending, yet I was slightly sad to be leaving the characters.

Also, Louise Voss will talk to you on Twitter. @LouiseVoss1 She seems very nice and down-to-earth!
----------- recommended to me via an on-line 100 best novels. the heroine's situation (having been given up for adoption ) pulled this kidless reader right in . . .
I just finished this book and I was very happy with it. I was captivated with Emma from the opening paragraph until the very end. Much of the first part of the is filled with lots and lots of background, but without these glimpses into Emma's past you would not fully appreciate who she is and how her past has brought her to the present point of the story. I loved every moment in this book, from the worst to the best. The author did a fantastic job of bringing the ending full circle. It was surely a fantastic read.
I found this book a little slow to start, but I stuck with it and found myself enjoying it. I do wish there was more time dedicated to the "second half" where Emma's life seemed to turn around. It seemed to me that part was rushed, while less important parts were sorta dragged out. However, it was a good read and I did enjoy it.
The book started very slow and was even a bit repetitive in the first half. I had to skim through some of the descriptions and I could not stand any more mentions of the homeless man. The second half was much better and I am glad I kept on reading. The second part is when the actual story starts to move forward and be ineresting. Quite a good book in over all.
It's hard for an American to fully understand a British book, but this one was so fun it was hard to let go! The basic premise of a 19 year old having full custody of a younger sibling wouldn't fly here, but neither would the support she did have in doing so. But how fascinating it was to watch the protagonist go through such a metamorphosis and period of self-discovery. The twists and turns in the story just didn't let up, and you are introduced to many characters who were both lovable and believable. This was an excellent read unless you are looking for deep meaning.
